What type of putter should I be using?

What is the right putter to use?

We get asked the question a lot of what putter is the best one to use. There isn’t really a simple answer to this unfortunately!

There are three things to focus on when choosing a putter – stroke, feel and looks.

Stroke –

There are three main types of stoke bias that occur and each of these helps to decide which putter is best suited for you.

Slight Arc Straight Strong Arc

This is to allow the club face to remain square to the target for as long as possible on approach to the ball. Therefore if you are a player with a Strong Arc stroke, don’t go for a putter that is designed as a straight back and through as this will not help you at all. The Strong Arc is designed to allow the head to rotate through the stroke and return the head to square at impact.

Feel –

Once you have chosen the correct neck fitting, the next thing to consider is feel. By this I mean both how the ball feels off the face as well as how well you can judge your distance control. If you feel that you are leaving the ball short of the hole consistently, then you might want to consider going for a bigger head to help you get a bit more distance without having to try to hit the ball harder and risk losing control of your stroke.

Looks –

This is a simple portion to choosing the putter. Make sure that you like how the putter looks. If you don’t like how it looks, you’re already going into the shot with a negative mindset.

A few more things to consider when choosing a new putter is the grip. There are so many options out there now from the traditional, to the thick SuperStroke grips. This is down to preference but I’ll quickly run through why you might lean towards one rather than the other.

The SuperStroke style is designed to take the wrists out of the stroke and by doing so makes it less 'handsy' and steadies it out.
