Are you using a Distance Measuring Device?
This week I’d like to talk about why a distance measuring device is such an important thing to invest in if you’re serious about improving your game.
We often hear people say that they don’t need a distance device because they only play the course that they’re a member at, another thing we hear is that people don’t think they’re good enough to get the benefit of using one. Both are things I consider to be some of the main reasons to get a device.
Before I go into detail why I think these are reasons to get a device, let me talk you through a few of the options you have when it comes to choosing the right one for you. The two main types of units to choose from are GPS, and Laser. Both have the pros and cons, but I wouldn’t say that one is better than the other.
For example, in a GPS device, you will get distances to the Front, Middle and Back of the green as standard. You can pay an annual membership fee to get more in-depth details such as burns, bunkers and you can even plot layups to leave your favourite distance. Another feature that is available with certain GPS units (Skycaddie Touch for example) give you hole views, which is great if you’re playing a course you’ve never been to before.
Lasers are great because they give you exact distances to anything that you point it at, including the flag, but also include bunkers, marker posts, burns.
There are however a few things that might make you pick one over the other. I use the laser as my device and have noticed that on occasion when I’m trying to get a distance to the pin if there’s trees behind the green it tends to pick that up rather than the pin. This is probably down to user error as I tend to forget I have this and use it in a bit of a rush.
The reason I believe it’s a great idea to invest in a device, especially if you play the same course more often than not is simple, you’re never going to play a hole the same way each time!
Even if you play regularly in a similar fashion, you have to factor in differing weather conditions including strength and direction of wind, temperature and rainfall. How many times can you say that you hit the same club for your second shot each and every time you play a particular hole at your course?
Another reason that it’s a good idea to get a device is knowing that you have the right club in your hand for the shot ahead. I remember countless times where I’ve been in between two clubs and after a quick zap on the flag, I know what the right club is (usually a club more than I think!).
Another thing I’m going to ask you, do you know how far you hit each club?
